I remember gazing wistfully at the banner ads showing off all the cool features contained in the full game that would pop up occasionally, never knowing that IвЂ™d finally get to play that full version twenty-something odd years later. This recollection is especially important since IвЂ™m fairly certain One Must Fall was my very first introduction to fighting games as a genre (I never owned a game console before the Nintendo 64 so it would be a while before I got to play games like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat). At its lowest speed setting, One Must Fall plays out like a slow-moving ballet of strategy and timing, at its highest, the HARs move so fast you can barely comprehend whatвЂ™s going on before one HAR is lying defeated on the ground.Д«ack when I played the demo version of One Must Fall (which, as you might expect, only came with a small portion of what the full game offered), I remember I was almost instantly enamored with the idea of getting to play as different robots with different moves and powers. One Must FallвЂ™s most unique feature however, is the ability to control how quickly the HARs move in a typical match. Four of the gameвЂ™s five different arenas also contain various environmental hazards such as lava jets and giant spikes, adding in yet another wrinkle to the gameвЂ™s combat. In addition to the basic single-player and two-player modes, One Must Fall also includes an RPG-esque Tournament mode in which players can actually create their own pilot and compete in four different tournaments, earning cash and upgrading their HAR through successive wins.

Each of the ten available single-player pilots also have varying amounts of strength, speed, and endurance, giving the game a lot of replay value since the same HAR being controlled by two different pilots will perform differently. Each of the eleven available HARs has its own basic and special moves as well as more advanced вЂњscrapвЂќ and вЂњdestructionвЂќ finisher moves (similar to Fatalities in Mortal Kombat). These HARs are controlled by human вЂњpilotsвЂќ who guide their respective HARs using a physical and mental link (think Pacific Rim meets Mortal Kombat). On a hunch, I decided to Google вЂњMS-DOS robot fighting gameвЂќ and imagine my surprise when the first result to pop up was the very game my brain had been struggling to remember: One Must Fall: 2097.Дeveloped by Epic Games (then known as Epic MegaGames) and released for MS-DOS PCs way back in 1994, One Must Fall features large robots called HARs (Human Assisted Robots) duking it out in one-on-one battles using a variety of different martial arts-based attacks and special moves.
